Abstract

724,293. Hydrodynamic fluid friction brakes. PARKERSBURG RIG & REEL CO. March 2, 1953 [March 20, 1952], No. 5722/53. Class 103 (1) [Also in Group XXIX] In a hydrodynamic brake the entry of fresh coolwater to provide a circulation flow for preventing the temperature of the main volume from rising too high,' takes place at entry channels 60 on the back face of the stator cups in a radially inward direction. The ports 60 are in the form of nozzles that provide an accelerated jet of water in a direction along the back surface of the stator housing so as to minimize turbulence. The ports 60 extend from annular spaces 67 connected to supply control valves 77. Discharge of water from the brake takes place through the clearance space 45 between the rotor and stator cup edges into an annular groove 50 in the housing, and through outlet connections 52 to a pipe 74 having a control valve 75. The construction is notable in that, as shown in Fig. 10, only certain of the cup vanes 27 extend over the full radial depth of the brake members, the other vanes 26 being terminated by an edge 28 intermediate the inner and outer radii.
