Abstract
761,421. Hydraulic turbines; centrifugal pumps. ESCHER WYSS AKT.-GES. Oct. 15, 1954 [Oct. 7, 1953], No. 29782/54. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). A labyrinth seal arranged in the flow path of leakage fluid between adjacent parts of a turbine or pump runner and its housing, comprises at least two annular throttling passages leading to and from an enlarged annular space bounded by the runner and housing, so that displacement of the runner radially from the axis alters the width of the passages to produce hydraulic forces to urge the runner back to its correct position. The runner 2 and housing 1 of a Frances turbine are shaped to provide passages 10, 11, 19, 20 leading to and from spaces 13, 22. During displacement in a radial direction axial forces produced in the spaces are balanced but radial forces produced in spaces 22 restore the runner to the central position.
