Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a fluid bearing for a high-speed turbine driven compressor shaft, the shaft 16 is supported by fluid-pressure in a sleeve 41 and the sleeve 41 is supported by fluid-pressure in a housing 11. A turbine driven compressor assembly comprises a compressor section 9, a turbine section 10 with a shaft-housing 11 therebetween. The housing 11 has a lubricating-oil inlet 36, branch passages 37, 38 and annular recesses 39, 40 therein and is bored to receive the sleeve 41 freely therein. The recesses 39, 40 communicate with a number of apertures 46, 47 in the sleeve 41 so as to provide pressurised oil between the shaft 16 and the sleeve 41. The sleeve 41 has a flange 42 having an annular recess 43 and V- shaped recesses 44, 45 to allow discharge of oil from the clearances between the housing 11 and the sleeve 41 and between the sleeve 41 and the shaft 16. One of the apertures 48 communicates with a passage 50 in the housing, and an annular passage 55 is provided therein; the passages 50 and 55 are connected to a discharge outlet 54. The sleeve 41 is prevented from rotating by a spring-pin 53 which is received by a bore 52 in the flange 42. In operation, pressurised oil is supplied to the inlet 36 and enters the clearances S1, S2, Fig. 2, via passages 37, 38, 40, 46 and 47 and leaves the clearances S1, S2, via passages 55, 56 and 54. Clearance is also provided between end of the sleeve 41 and an extension of the impeller 35 and between the flange 42 and a retaining-ring 58. Thus the pressurized oil also resists thrust. In a modification, the inlet 36, Fig. 4, connects with an annular groove 60 in the housing 11, and apertures 61 in the sleeve 41 supply oil to the clearance between the sleeve and the shaft. Axial grooves 63, Figs 5 and 6, are provided in the sleeve 41 to facilitate oil flow and to collect foreign matter.
