[Also in Division F2] A hydraulic turbine, pump or pump-turbine is of the type in which air is fed through pipes 30, 31 to annular chambers 10, 11 between the stator 33 and the crown 1 and band 2 of the runner to displace the water from the chambers so as to reduce fluid friction between the runner and the stator, seals 7, 8 being provided at the radially inner ends of the chambers. If the runner overspeeds, a governor 19 or other speed-sensing device closes a switch 22 to open a solenoid-actuated valve 24 to release the air from chamber 10 via pipe 26. Water then re-enters the chamber 10 to exert a braking effect. For this purpose a hydrodynamic brake is formed by radial ribs carried by the runner and stator within the chamber 10 and dividing the chamber into a series of pockets 15, 16 separated by a clearance 34. A similar brake may be provided in chamber 11. The runner blades 3 may be extended through the runner shrouds into one or both chambers 10, 11 to form the dividing ribs.
