A fluid coupling comprising a driving shaft 2, a driven shaft 8, a bearing assembly 4, 5 in which the driving shaft is mounted, a bearing assembly 10, 11 in which the driven shaft is mounted, an impeller shell 16 of 8-shaped cross-section secured at 17 to the driving shaft, radial impeller blades 25 secured within one half of the shell, a runner housing 23 secured at 24 to the driven shaft and contained within the other half of the impeller shell, radial runner blades 26 secured within the runner housing 23 and adapted to be driven by the impeller blades through the medium of a fluid, a freely rotatable housing 29 in which the impeller shell is contained, radially positioned centrifugal pump fins 21 protruding from the outer face of the portion of the impeller shell in which the runner housing is contained, the impeller shell being pierced with fluid outlet orifices 22 adjacent to the fins, bearing assemblies 30, 33 upon which the rotatable housing 29 is freely mounted, and fluid normally contained within the impeller shell and in the freely rotatable housing, has a brake 37 engagable by the housing and by which its rotative speed may be retarded, a fluid reservoir 40, and fluid inlet 7 and outlet 15 conduits extending between the fluid reservoir and the coupling. The impeller shell 16 is pierced by fluid inlet orifices 18, and the coupling has a rotatable fluid chamber 36 with outlet pipes 35 extending to the periphery of the freely rotatable housing 29. Fluid is supplied from the reservoir 40 through the inlet conduit 7, the quantity being governed by the height of the slidable regulating sleeve 41, and passes into the housing 29 and through the orifices 18 into the impeller shell. The impeller, runner, and housing 29 will then rotate together. If the relative speed of the housing is reduced by the application of the brake 37, the fins 21 will pump fluid from the housing 29 and from the orifices 22 into the pipes 35 and outlet conduit 15 into the reservoir.
