780,892. Hydraulic couplings. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1955, No. 5924/55. Class 69 (2). An hydrokinetic coupling has a rotating scoop chamber communicating with the working chamber and housing two oppositely disposed scoop tubes 106, 108 interconnected by means for simultaneously adjusting their position so that the same torque transmitting characteristics will be obtained irrespective of the direction of rotation of the coupling. The coupling comprises an impeller 16 fast on a driving shaft 10, a runner 18 fast with an output shaft 12, and a casing 20 fast with the impeller and provided with a baffle 62. Working liquid inside casing 20 is withdrawn by the operative scoop 106 or 108 and discharges into a sump 26. Liquid is drawn from the sump 26 by a pump impeller 34 on the driving shaft 10 and is discharged through a cooler (not shown) to the working chamber of the coupling through a duct 36. A valve 74 is automatically operated by fluid pressure so that the supply of liquid to the coupling is maintained irrespective of the direction of rotation of the shaft 10.
