Abstract
1,122,647. Fluid couplings. T. G. M. SCHIFFELERS. 23 Aug., 1965 [2 Sept., 1964], No. 36110/65. Heading F2C. A fluid coupling comprises a turbine 9 on a shaft 2 and an impeller 4 carrying a casing 5 and a reservoir 6 mounted on shaft 2 via bearings 7, 7a with seals 8, 8a, and having centrifugally operated inlet valves 14 and outlet valves 19 disposed 90 degrees apart (the shown section being along two planes at right angles), and the wall section of the turbine 9 consists of a radial wall 9b inclined towards an inner cylindrical wall 23. At rest valves 19 are open; on rotation of impeller 4, fluid circulates in chamber 11 and moves down the inclined wall 9b of the turbine 9 to bounce upon the cylindrical surface 23 and lose energy before flowing back to reservoir 6 via the still open valves 19; as the speed increases, valves 19, 20 close and valves 14 open, the fluid being kept circulating in the outer part of chamber 11 so no energy is lost at surface 23 and full torque is transmitted, Fig. 3 (not shown). If the turbine 9 is overloaded, fluid will first strike surface 23, Fig. 4 (not shown), and if the coupling does not recover by the energy loss and produced slip, the impeller is subsequently slowed down until when the stalling speed of the prime mover is approached the valves 19 open and fluid flows, after dissipation of its energy, to reservoir 6, the inlet valves being closed, causing a decrease in torque to enable the prime mover to recover.
