908,853. Hydraulic couplings. SINCLAIR, H. Sept. 1, 1960 [Sept. 8, 1959], No. 30686/59. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic turbo coupling comprises vaned impeller and runner elements 1, 2, a casing 3 rotatable with one of the elements and forming a working chamber, a rotatable reservoir 4 to which liquid flows from the working chamber through leak-off nozzles 5, an adjustable scoop tube 6 for returning the liquid through a cooler 15 to the working chamber, and a valve 26 in a direct-filling duct 29 in the scoop tube housing, the valve being responsive to pressure at the scoop tube outlet 12 so that, during normal running, the valve is closed and liquid picked up by the scoop tube passes through the cooler to the working chamber and, when the pressure increases upon adjustment of the tube to immerse the scooping orifice 11 more deeply, the valve opens so that liquid can pass directly through the duct to the working chamber, some also passing through the cooler. The casing 3, reservoir 4 and impeller 1 are driven by an input shaft 22, and the runner 2 is connected to an output shaft 20 located in bearings in the casing 3. Liquid in the casing passes through the nozzles 5 into the reservoir and is returned by the scoop tube, which is adjustable by levers 8, 10, through the outlet port 12, pipe 13, cooler 15, pipe 16, chamber 18 and ports 19. During normal operation, a spring 27 maintains the valve 26 in a position closing the directfilling duct 29, but, upon increase in pressure at the outlet port 12 when the scooping orifice 11 is immersed more deeply in the liquid in the reservoir, the valve is moved against its spring so that fluid passes directly through the duct 29 to the chamber 18 and ports 19, some liquid also passing, as before, through the cooler to the chamber 18.
