722,667. Gear pumps; gas turbine plant. SOC. DU CARBURATEUR ZENITH. Jan. 29, 1953 [Feb. 1, 1952], No. 2598/53. Classes 110 (2) and 110 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] The inlet and outlet conduits of a gear pump, Fig. 3, are interconnected by a passage that is controlled by a piston 30 which slides in a graphitic housing 28 opening into the zone of penetration of said gear-wheels, as shown. The housing 28 is connected to the inlet side of the pump which has graphitic bearings 11, 12, 20. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the piston is spring-loaded and a restriction orifice is disposed in the conduit 37. In a modification, Fig. 8, comprising two pumps 7, 8a and 7, 8b having common inlet and outlet manifolds 45, 46, respectively, the output of the pumps is controlled by pistons 29a, 29b which are jointly controlled by a servomotor comprising a valve 53 responsive to the pressures prevailing in the inlet and outlet manifolds. The valve 53 is adapted to connect the cylinders of said pistons either to a source 47, 48 of lubricating oil under pressure or to a discharge conduit 62 therefor. The gear spindles 9, 19a, 19b have lubricating channels such as 51 which communicate with the conduit 48. Alternatively, the pistons may be actuated by the fuel passing through the pump and the spindles lubricated by said fuel, see Fig. 9 (not shown). In further modifications, Figs. 10, 11, 12 and 13 (not shown), the servomotor is controlled respectively by a thermostat, a centrifugal governor, the pressure difference across a centrifugal impeller and a spring-loaded diaphragm responsive to the variations between the discharge and suction pressures of the pump. In a modification of the embodiments described with reference to Figs. 8 ... 12, the pump incorporates two inter-connected by-pass means symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of the gearing and jointly controlled, Fig. 14 (not shown). The pump supplies fuel to an internal combustion engine or a gas turbine plant and is actuated in response to the temperature of the combustion means of the plant or the speed thereof.
