Abstract
585,029. Gas turbines. ELDRED, R. J., WALKER, G. W. HIGGS-, and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 20, 1943, Nos. 8063 and 20739. [Class 110 (iii)] A control valve, for regulating fuel admission to a continuous combustion gas turbine during starting and running up to idling speed, comprises a piston valve 13 which opens ports G as it moves to the right. The whole delivery of the fuel pump passes through throttling passages B to a central space where a constant pressure is maintained by a relief valve. The pump used is of a type in which the delivery volume varies directly with the pump speed and accordingly the delivery pressure, obtaining in the spaces A, A<1>, varies with the speed. This pressure, applied to a piston 16 is opposed by a spring and moves the piston valve to the right as the speed increases. A single throttling orifice B may be used and when, as shown, other throttling orifices are uncovered as the speed increases, these are of such a size that the delivery pressure, as determined by the pressure-drop through the orifices, still increases with the pump speed. There is only a leakage flow out of the space A<1> and a fine filter is placed in front of that space. The device is also shown combined with a governor as described in Specification 585,032, [Group XXIX], and co-operating with a main fuel control valve as described in Specification 585,028, [Group XXIX]. The throttling orifice may be formed in the body of the piston valve or exterior to the valve casing and the operative pressure may be applied to one end of the piston valve which in such case is not formed with a piston 16.
