Abstract

315,376. Anger, J. R. July 12, 1928, [Convention date]. Movable -abutment type.-A rotary engine or pump has an oscillating abutment actuated in one direction by the piston vanes and returned to its original position by the fluid pressure. The piston 1 has two vanes 5, 6 which trip the projection 10 on the abutment 8 to rock it. When the vane has passed, the pressure of fluid on the abutment restores it to the initial position ready for engagement with the other vane. The fluid enters at 7 and leaves at 8<1> along the axis of the abutment, the passage of which may be convoluted to produce the return effect on the abutment. This effect may also be produced by providing the face 10<1> with a greater surface than the face 10. A single piston may be used with several abutments in the same casing. The abutment may control an electric switch and the device may be used as a motor or a pump. In Fig. 7, the device is used as a supercharger to force carburetted gas entering at 26 into an internal combustion engine 22. The piston 24 and abutment 27 act as a pump in the usual way to pass the compressed gas through the channels 29, 30 to the engine. The spring stop 32 acts as a safety valve. The piston may have annular flanges 13, 14, 15, Fig. 5, to emulsify the liquid by the air entering through the bearings of the piston shaft and so reduce the weight.
