Abstract
984,978. Regulating positive displacement and centrifugal pumps and compressors. SCULLY SIGNAL CO. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 21, 1961], No. 46649/62. Headings F1A, F1C, F1F and F1N. [Also in Division H2] A flow sensitive device for controlling the speed of an I.C. engine driving a pump or compressor, e.g. of positive displacement or centrifugal type, comprises a flexible vane 92 disposed in the pump delivery line and controlling a switch 108 in the circuit of a solenoid controlling the engine throttle. Vane 92 is carried by a lever 86 on a shaft 60 mounted in antifriction bearings and carrying a switch operating arm 76 loaded by a spring 106 of adjustable tension. The housing 42 carrying the vane and switch is angularly adjustable in pipe union 36 and is clamped in position by a ring 48. Arrows 124 indicate the alignment of the vane. In operation, a valved nozzle at the end of the delivery line is connected to a tank to be filled, the I.C. engine being in its idling position and a pump by-pass circuit being in operation for a positive displacement pump. When the nozzle valve is opened, the flow through the pipe is sufficient to move vane 92 to operate the switch and hence open the engine throttle. When the nozzle valve is closed, the vane is returned by its spring to open the switch and return the engine speed to idling. A member 96 on lever 86 supports the vane when in its full flow position.
