Abstract

517,989. Hydraulic transmission of power. SINCLAIR, H., and BASEBE, A. C. Aug. 12, 1938, No. 23866. [Class 69 (ii)] Motor vehicles are fitted with hydraulic power transmitters of the kind described in Specification 493,703, which are inserted between the engine and gear box 10. The transmitter comprises an impeller member 13 driven by the crankshaft 14, a runner 15 secured to the input shaft 16 of the gear box 10, and a cover plate 35 connected to the impeller and formed with a drainage aperture 36, and is constructed with a reservoir chamber R situated between the plate 35 and a casing 18, 18A, 18B secured to the impeller member, the effective maximum capacity of the chamber R being between 50 and 70 per cent. of the normal liquid content of the working- chamber, e.g., 60 per cent. A rapid-emptying valve 29 is arranged between the working- chamber and the chamber R, and this is. operated to permit liquid to leave the working-chamber when the car is stopped with the engine running or when changing into reverse. This valve is operated by depressing a foot-lever 45, or when a handbrake lever 57 is operated, and in each case a lever 42 acts on a shifting-ring 23 attached to a sleeve 20 mounted so as to be capable of sliding on the shaft 16. The movement of the sleeve 20 to the left forces open the valve disc 29 against the action of a spring 30, and the sleeve which is normally held stationary by brake members 24, 25 is thus free to rotate and carry with it a pair of scoop tubes 26 which are normally inactive, and an additional scoop 26A, Fig. 4, the mouth of which extends into the bulge 18C in the casing 18 and which acts to return to the working-chamber liquid which drains through the aperture 36. After the valve has been opened, all the scoops act to return the fluid to the working-chamber. The scoops 26 are fitted with non-return valves to prevent escape back into the reservoir R of scooped liquid. The valve 29 has a bevelled edge 33 which seats on a bevelled seating 34 in the cover plate 35. It may be replaced by a valve as described in connection with Fig. 4 of Specification 493,703. The gearing in the gear box 10 may be of the kind described in Specification, 486,589.
