Abstract

726,791. Bearing mountings. HOUDAILLEHERSHEY CORPORATION. July 7, 1952 [Sept. 26, 1951], No. 17006/52. Class 12 (1). A mounting for a bearing 15 comprises a housing ring 17 surrounding the bearing and fluid pressure means within the housing for restraining radial movement of the bearing. The ring 17 has annular end closure plates 18 and is provided with annular fluid distributing channels 29, 29 opening to the end plates. The ring 17 is also provided with a number of radial slots 30 which carry slidable vanes 31 engaging the race ring 19 and a floating ring 33 to define chambers 36. Communication between the channels 29 is by means of apertures 34 and fluid is supplied to the chambers 36 through a conduit 39, channels 29, passageways 41, 44 and return check valves 45. Radial grooves 37, 38 are formed in the outer faces of the ring 17 and lead from the upper chamber 36 to the channels 29, 29 and to the atmosphere to allow air to bleed from the system. In operation, when the chambers 36 are filled with oil the bearing 15 may move radially with respect to the ring 17, the chambers in the direction of radial movement being reduced in capacity and the other chambers increased. This will force fluid in the chambers of decreasing volume through notches 35 in the vanes 31 into the chambers of increasing volume. Where the vanes are not provided with notches 35 the leakage of fluid may take place between the chambers past the inner edges of the vanes. The housing may however, be completely filled with oil, the vents 37 and 38 closed, and the ring 19 sealed to the end plates 18 to provide a selfcontained unit. In a modification, the bearing may be mounted exterior of the ring 17 in a spring supported block, the block having a sleeve which coaxially enters the ring 17 and supports a surrounding ring which takes the operative place of the race 19 in the previous embodiment.
