Abstract

650,746. Torsional vibration-dampers. JENDRASSIK G., and GANZ & CO., Ltd. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34465. Convention date, July 3, 1941. [Class 108(iii)] In an apparatus for damping torsional oscillations of a shaft of the kind employing an annular oscillating mass arranged around the axis of rotation of the shaft and enclosed in a liquid-filled casing and bearing against resilient means interposed between the casing and the annular mass, a plurality of chambers between the mass and the casing is provided by a series of ribs formed on the mass, interdigitating with a series of ribs formed on the casing, small clearances, gaps, throttling passages or the like being provided in or between the chambers wholly within the casing for establishing communication between adjacent chambers. In the arrangement shown, an oil filled drum 3, closed by a cover 4 and secured on a hub 2, which is keyed to the end of a shaft 1, also houses a ring shaped mass 5. The mass 5 is retained within the drum 3 by means of springs 13 which co-operate with radially inward extensions 12 on the mass 5 and supportmembers 10 bolted to the drum 3. Stops 8 on the drum 3 limit relative rotation of the latter and the mass 5. Radially spaced ribs 6 on the mass 5 project into spaces between similar ribs 7 on the inner surface of the cover 4, such that relative rotation of the drum and mass 5 is damped by displacement of oil in the spaces between the ribs, through a narrow gap at the tip of each rib. During the filling operation of the drum, before assembly of the damper to the shaft, a closing ring 21 defines an air space within the drum to permit expansion of the oil in the latter during operation of the damper. Preferably, the damper is filled with the lubricating oil of the machine to which it is attached and is in permanent connection with the machine oil storage tank. Alternatively the damper may be connected to a separate stand-by tank. The ribs 6 and 7 may include bore holes or channels and may be disposed respectively on the external cylindrical surface of the mass 5 and on the adjacent internal surface of the drum. 3. Also a single stop 8 and a diametrically opposite spring system may be employed. In the arrangement shown the ribs may extend obliquely to the radial direction. The mass 5 may comprise a plurality of members. Specification 145,173, [Class 108 (iii)], is referred to.
