Abstract
508,513. Axial and torsional vibration dampers; springs. JUHLIN, G. A., POOLE, R., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1938, No. 20. [Class 108 (iii)] An axial vibration damper for a crank-shaft comprises a member mounted on the shaft at or near the end so as to move axially with the shaft, and an inertia member arranged for movement with respect to the first member in the axial direction of the shaft, the members being arranged in or providing an enclosure which contains or is adapted to contain a fluid medium whereby relative movement between the two members will be fluid damped. As shown in Fig. 1, a cylindrical container 1 is bolted to the flange of a crankshaft by the base 3 and is closed by a cover 39. An axial spigot 4 is secured to the base and passes through the cover and is secured thereto by a nut 12. An annular weight 5 is slidable along the cylinder, under axial vibrations, and displaces liquid from one side to the other through orifices 6 and axial bore 4a. The rate of flow through the orifices may be controlled by varying the position of the coned end of a screwed plug 7. In Fig. 2, an axial vibration damper 26 is combined with a torsional vibration damper 21 or may be integral therewith, The torsional vibration may be of known type comprising a fixed toothed ring 22 and a loose toothed ring 21 connected by their teeth through flexible members 24 or by a continuous zig-zag strip 25. The axial vibration damper 26 may be centralized by springs 32, Fig. 3, having turns 35, 36, 37 of tapered formation adapted to be received in a tapered recess 38. The deflection of the spring is not linearly related to the load thereon with the result that the natural frequency of the tuned combination of the member 26 with the spring system will change with changes in the amplitude of the oscillation of the inertia member with respect to the shaft 15. The torsional vibration damper 21 may be attached to the axial vibration damper 26 and slidable along the flexible members 24. Specification 427,138 is referred to.
