Abstract
673,773. Torsional vibration dampers. HOLMES & CO., Ltd., W. C., CROSET, L. P., and HOLMES, F. B. April 6, 1950, No. 8696/50. Class 108(iii) A method of constructing a viscous friction damper of the type in which an annular slipping flywheel is enclosed within a casing adapted to be fixed to a rotary shaft, includes the steps of forming or fabricating a first inwardly flanged cylindrical component with an internal diameter slightly greater than the external diameter of the flywheel, similarly forming a second outwardly flanged ;externally cylindrical component with an external diameter less than the internal diameter of the flywheel, bringing the two components together so as to enclose the flywheel and welding them together to form a casing therefor with two continuous welds, one weld in the region of the plane containing one end face of the flywheel, and the other weld in the region of the plane containing the other end face of the flywheel. In the arrangement shown, an annular flywheel 11 is enclosed by a first component 12 of a fluid tight casing, including an inward flange 12a, welded to a second component 13 having a corresponding outward flange 13a. The end and cylindrical surfaces of the flywheel may be polished and may be coated with a protective layer of chromium or cadmium. The complimentary surfaces of the casing may also be polished. The polished surfaces of the flywheel and the casing are preferably treated with a viscous fluid such as silicone oil prior to assembly. A clearance between the inner periphery of the flywheel and the component 13 acts as a reservoir which contains about two thirds by volume of viscous liquid and one third air. A filling plug may be secured by welding. The first component 12 is formed by pressing and the second component 13 is formed by pressing or drop stamping. The casing is rigidly attached to a shaft (not shown), by means of a flange 17 welded to the component 13. In a modification, Fig. 3, (not shown), the flange 17 is integrally formed as an inwardly projecting flange aligned with the flange 13a. In another arrangement Fig. 4, (not shown), each of a pair of flywheels is enclosed by a space defined by one of a pair of first components and a central outward flange of a common second component.
