Abstract

1,209,357. Vibration dampers. MASCHINENFABRIK STROMAG G.m;b:H. 27 Feb.,. 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 9437/68. Heading F2S. A torsional vibration damper consists of inner and outer generally cylindrical members 1, 5 provided respectively with radially outwardly and inwardly projecting annular discs 2, 7 which interdigitate. The members 1 and 5 are drivingly interconnected by a resilient element 4 which, together with the members themselves, defines a sealed chamber enclosing the interdigitating discs. This chamber also contains a vibration absorbing medium, which may be a liquid, a tar-like substance or particulate solid and which fills the spaces between the discs. When the medium is a highly viscous liquid whose viscosity falls with increasing temperature, an air vent 11 may be provided. This is normally closed by a ball 12 which may either be fusible at a temperature at which the liquid viscosity becomes unacceptably low, or merely be displaced by expansion of the liquid. In either case, the admission of air restores the liquid to an acceptable viscosity; and where the fusible ball is employed, the consequent fall in temperature causes it to re-solidify and reseal.
