Abstract

1,254,038. Hydraulic coupling. USUI KOKUSAI SANGYO K.K. 17 Oct., 1969 [16 Nov., 1968], No. 51157/69. Heading F2C. The supply of liquid to and from a working chamber 6 of a viscous shear type fluid coupling is controlled by output speed responsive centrifugal valves 8, 10 which maintain the output speed substantially constant. As shown a partition 2 divides a driven housing 1 into a working chamber 6 containing a driving rotor 3 and a reservoir 5. Outlet and inlet ports 9, 11 in the partition 2 are respectively closed by the valve 8 and opened by the valve 10 below a predetermined output speed whereby fluid flows from the reservoir to the working chamber to reduce the slip of the coupling and increase output speed. Above the predetermined speed centrifugal force on the valves 8, 10 overcomes springs to open the valve 8 and close the valve 10. Thereafter an impact pump 7a forces liquid from the working chamber through the port 9 into the reservoir to reduce the output speed. The valves thus operate to maintain the output speed substantially constant. In Fig. 8 (not shown) an additional chamber is provided between the working chamber and the reservoir and fluid which flows from the working chamber into the additional chamber is pumped by an impact pump into the reservoir. In Fig. 5 (not shown) a driving housing surrounds a driven hollow rotor, the space within the rotor forming the reservoir and containing the centrifugally controlled valves.
