1483230 Rotary positive-displacement fluidmachines SARGENT INDUSTRIES Inc 1 Oct 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 42568/74 Heading F1F In a hydraulic system comprising two pumps P 1 , P 2 , e.g. gear pumps, driven by a variable speed engine of a vehicle and supplying liquid to an auxiliary mechanism 23 on the vehicle, e.g. a refuse packer, a control valve 21 responsive to the pump output pressure and flow acts to by-pass the output from one of the pumps when a predetermined output pressure or flow is exceeded, thereby permitting quieter operation of the vehicle. Valve 21 comprises an adjustable spring-loaded spool 26 with a passage 27 between ports 28 and 29 through which the output of pump P 1 passes, port 28 being dimensioned such that when the throughflow exceeds a predetermined level, the pressure differential between the valve chambers respectively communicating with ports 28, 29 causes movement of spool 26 to the right from the position shown, in which pump P 2 delivers via passages 19, 37, check-valve 38 and port 22 to mechanism 23, to a position, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which valve land 35 has moved to permit communication between port 19 and by-pass port 40, tapered grooves 60 in land 35 controlling the flow. For pressure control of spool 26, pressure from pump P 1 acts via passages 41, 49, 47, chamber 46, restricted passage 50, chamber 45, passage 52 and chamber 51 on a valve 54, which opens against adjustable spring 55 when the pressure reaches the predetermined level, and the pressure differential set up across piston 44 moves piston 44 and spool 26 to the right.
