Abstract

995,415. Liquid-ring pumps. I. C. JENNINGS. May 24, 1961 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 18793/61. Heading F1C. A single-lobe liquid-ring pump is arranged so that the out-of-balance forces acting on the pump rotor are reduced. A single-lobe liquidring pump, Figs. 2 and 3, comprises heads 12 at each end of the casing and each carrying the usual conical port members 34 surrounding the shaft and projecting into the rotor. Each head 12 comprises an inlet 32 and three alternative discharges 42, the two unused discharges being blanked-off by cover plates 44. Shaft bearings 16 and stuffing boxes 17 are carried by the heads 12. The two halves of the pump are separated by a central partition 26 on the rotor and a central partition 28 in the casing. The lobes 30 of the two halves of the pump are in alignment with one another and are so disposed that the thrust exerted on the rotor by the compression forces acts upwardly in opposition to the weight of the rotor. Alternatively, the two lobes may be arranged at 180 degrees with respect to one another whereby the thrusts exerted by the compression forces balance one another. A recess 56 in each head 12 may be blanked-off by a cover plate. However, if reduction gearing 62, 64 is provided, an alternative apertured cover plate 58 is used, in conjunction with a gear chamber cover 60, the cover plate apertures providing communication between the gear chamber and the recess 56 whereby the latter acts as a lubricant reservoir. The lubricant is circulated within the recess 56 by an impeller 72 and cooled by conduction through the walls of the recess to the relatively cool seal liquid passing through the pump discharge passage 40. Longitudinal passages 50 communicating with the lobes 30 through ports 48 and connected to transverse passages 52 allow the pump to be unloaded or drained by opening the passages 52 to atmosphere through valves and piping not shown. The pressure existing in the passages 52 during normal operation may be communicated through piping 84, Fig. 6, and a passage 80 to arcuate grooves 76 in each port member 34, whereby a downward thrust is extended on the rotor to act against the upward thrust exerted by the compression forces. Specifications 324,249, 324,286, 850,140 and 995,416 are referred to.
