Abstract

880,539. Gear pumps. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. April 12, 1960 [April 15, 1959], No. 13041/60. Class 110 (2). In a fluid pressure-loaded intermeshing gear pump each floating end plate, Fig. 5, is provided with pressure-balancing grooves 110, 112 which communicate with the pressure side of the pump by way of a chamber 98 and a port 94. The groove 110 constitutes a chamfered portion extending circumferentially from the outlet towards the inlet whilst the groove 112 extends circumferentially about the inlet and is located radially inwardly of the root diameter of the adjacent gear. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the chamfered groove is replaced by a recess disposed intermediate the gear root diameter and the outer periphery of the thrust plate and is connected to the balancing groove extending circumferentially of the inlet side of the pump. Each thrust plate incorporates a number of spring-loaded pistons 130, 132, 134, Fig. 3, which are bored at 146 to vent high-pressure fluid from the chamber 100 back to the inlet side of the pump. Alternatively the vent holes may be made in the pump casing.
