Abstract

803,462. Hydraulic couplings. FLUIDRIVE PATENTS, Ltd. July 5, 1955 [July 9, 1954], No. 20219/54. Class 69 (2). An hydrodynamic coupling is partially emptied under conditions of excessive load. A coupling suitable for use where the starting torque is low comprises an impeller 6 fast with an input sleeve 1, and a runner 9 fast with an output shaft 11. In the event of the output shaft becoming overloaded working liquid passes beneath a lip 13 of the impeller and discharges through pipes 17 into a reservoir formed by a casing 18 fast with the input sleeve. Liquid is returned to the working chamber by an adjustable scoop tube 19. During normal working liquid is continuously drained from the working chamber through nozzles 21. Couplings for use where the starting torque is normal or high are provided with valves interrupting communication between the working chamber and the reservoir, except through the leak-off nozzles, under starting conditions. The discharge passages may be formed in the runner instead of the impeller. The discharge passages may open into a reservoir casing which may be stationary and associated with a sump from which liquid is returned to the working chamber by a pump and drain ports may be provided which open into a rotatable scoop chamber from which liquid is discharged to a sump. In other embodiments the leak-off nozzles are omitted, the excess liquid supplied to the working chamber being discharged through the discharge passages.
