Abstract

1,008,497. Hydrodynamic couplings. SELFCHANGING GEARS Ltd. Oct. 2, 1964 [Oct. 2, 1963], No. 38744/63. Heading F2C. In a hydrodynamic coupling having impeller and turbine elements in a working chamber 13 and on emptying valve 29 which is normally closed by spring and centrifugal force, a valve (not shown) selectively supplies pressure liquid from an impeller driven pump A either through ducts 7, 8, 10, 11 to the working chamber 13 or through ducts 18, 19, 20, 22, 26 to a control piston 27 which moves down to open the valve 29 and empty the working chamber 13. During idling the impeller rear bearing 2 is lubricated by liquid supplied through branch ducts 32, 33 and the bearings 5, 34 are lubricated by leakage. A pressure regulator valve is provided in the ducts to the piston 27. During operation, excess liquid in the working chamber is returned through ducts 14, 15, 16, 17 and a cooler to a sump B in a fixed casing 4. Slats 31 may be cut in the outer periphery of the turbine to facilitate the escape of liquid from the working chamber.
