Abstract
1,147,062. Gear pumps. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. May 3, 1966 [May 8, 1965], No. 19521/65. Heading F1F. A gear pump comprising on each side of the pump gears 18, 28, Fig. 3, a pair of bearing bushes 22, 32 and 24, 34 of D-shape external configuration rotatably supporting the driven and idler shafts 20, 30 with the plane faces of the D contiguous, includes between the outer end faces of the bushes and the adjacent inner faces of the housing covers 78, 44 a seal 70 to prevent the leakage of hydraulic fluid that occurs between the contiguous surfaces and around the bushes. The seal 70, Fig. 5, is of figure-of-eight configuration with further portions 72 bridging the break between the bushes. The bushes and the shafts are lubricated by the leakage of some of the pumped fluid at discharge pressure outwardly from the gears along the shafts 20, 30. A passage 84 in the cover 78, bore 88 in the shaft 30 and passages 59, 92, 94 permit a controlled flow of the lubricant to the inlet side of the pump. Pistons 50, 60 lightly loaded by springs 62 and subjected on their rear faces to pump discharge pressure seal the bushes 24, 34 against the gears 18, 28 and the gears 18, 28 against the bushes 22, 32.
