Abstract

806,253. Hydraulic couplings. SINCLAIR, H. July 30, 1957 [Aug. 15, 1956], No. 25021/56. Class 69 (2). A Fottinger coupling of the type in which fluid from a fixed sump 10 is supplied to the working chamber by a pump 11, has valves 21 for quick emptying of the chamber when the input speed is reduced to engine idling speed. The pump 11 is connected to space 26 of the valves 21 via radial tubes 19. Under normal operation, ball 30 is forced centrifugally on to seat 31, so that equal pressure exists on either side of the disc 24, which is maintained on its seat by the larger effective area on the radially outer side. When the engine is idling, spring 32 forces ball 30 away from its seat, so that space 26 is exhausted, allowing liquid to escape rapidly from the working chamber via space 23, passage 35, port 351 and passage 36 to sump 10.
