Abstract

806,364. Hydrodynamic brakes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 22, 1956 [Dec. 28, 1955], No. 35738/56. Class 103 (1). An hydrodynamic brake unit 12, which is incorporated within the same casing as a hydraulic transmission unit 10 comprises a braking chamber 40 and a brake valve 70 movable between a " brake on " position in which an outlet pipe 61 from the brake chamber 40 and a source of fluid under pressure are connected to an inlet pipe 68 to the chamber, and a " brake off " position in which the outlet pipe 61 and a source of pressure are disconnected from the inlet 68. Fluid within the torque converter unit 11, pressurized therein by a pump 53, then fills the brake by passages through filter 57, non-return-valve 58, cooler 66 and pipes 67 and 68. The pressure within the brake chamber 40 may be regulated by the position of the land 73 in the valve 70, which determines the rate of leakage away through pipes 74 and 76 to the reservoir 50. The brake chamber 40 is emptied of fluid by operation of the valve 70 to connect outlet pipe 61 through pipes 74 and 76 to the reservoir 50, the communication between inlet pipes 67 and 68 being then interrupted. In an alternative embodiment described the rotary type manual control valve 70 is replaced by a reciprocatory piston-type slide valve.
