Abstract

1,176,590. Valves. AMADYNE Inc. 29 Aug., 1968, No. 41276/68. Heading F2V. A relief valve has a progressively variable spring loading adapted to vary automatically to produce a cushion action on the associated hydraulic system. The valve has a primary piston 6 loaded by spring 17 and movable to the right by high pressure fluid applied through inlet 2, annulus 4 and bore 13 to chamber 12. When land 5 on piston 6 uncovers annulus 8 fluid can flow from inlet 2 via bores 9 to outlet 3. Annulus 4 is also connected via a conduit 21 and a metering device to a chamber 19 which, when pressurized, moves a second piston 18 to the left towards a stop 20 to increase the loading of spring 7 urging piston 6 to the left. The metering device comprises an orifice 31 which feeds chamber 19 via an annular space 24 (Fig. 5) around piston 18, which space reduces in effective cross-section as piston 18 moves to the left, so progressively decreasing the rate of increase of the spring loading on piston 6 as the pressure in inlet 2 increases. The Specification states that the shape of space 24 can be altered to produce a number of different operating characteristics.
