634,948. Hydraulic transmission of power. AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNGSTROMS ANGTURBIN. Oct. 7, 1947, No. 26896. Convention date, Oct. 9, 1946. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydraulic torque converter of the Fottinger type having an axially-displaceable ring-valve disposed between the pump wheel and an adjacent turbine wheel, the ring valve is provided with channels for the operative liquid, which are so dimensioned and directed that liquid flowing therethrough, when the valve is inserted into the flow circuit, will set up a torque acting on the turbine in a direction opposed to the torque acting on the turbine when the valve is withdrawn from the circuit. The pump wheel 12 with blades 6 is connected to a driving shaft 11 and the turbine wheel 13 with blades rings 7, 14 and 15 is secured to the driven shaft 16. The ring valve 1 may be moved axially by a lever 2 to interrupt the flow of liquid between the pump and turbine whilst a disc 18 is interposed between the radial part of the ring valve 1 and the exterior of the pump wheel 12 in order to reduce the ventilating effect when the ring valve is in its extreme leftward or inoperative position. When the ring valve 1 is in its operative position, torque will still be' transmitted due to a leakage of working liquid, so the channels are provided in the valve in order to produce an opposing torque which will counteract the torque due to leakage.
