Abstract
875,168. Hydraulic torque converters. TWIN DISC CLUTCH CO. June 6,1958, No. 18221/58. Class 69 (2). An hydrodynamic torque converter is designed to give an increase in the stall torque ratio, better low-speed ratio performance and a more rising impeller torque absorption curve than a conventional single-stage converter, and comprises an impeller 12, a turbine 17 splined to an output shaft 19 and a stator 22 fast with a stationary sleeve 24. The impeller includes a core ring 14 and an end ring 13 which converge in the direction of liquid flow, and the turbine has core and end rings 20, 18 which diverge in the direction of flow, the rings 22, 25 of the stator are parallel, and the walls of all the core rings adjacent the blades are transverse to the converter axis. The converging walls of the impeller reduce as much as possible the pressure head which develops as liquid flows outwardly between the impeller blades. Liquid is bled off from the working chamber through a gap 29 between the stator and impeller, and passes through a pressure-regulating valve to a sump. The pressure-regulating valve maintains a pressure at the impeller inlet which reduces cavitation in the impeller. Liquid is drawn from the sump by an engine-driven pump and supplied through a cooler and a passage 34 to the working chamber between the turbine and stator. To prevent cavitation in passages 16, 27, between the impeller and turbine and between the stator and impeller respectively, the cross-sectional area of passage 16 is reduced towards the turbine, whilst that of the passage 27 is constant or slightly increased towards the pump. Two forms of impeller blade are described, a relatively low capacity blade and a high capacity blade which is longer and has a greater outlet angle than the other. The working liquid mass rotated by the impeller is substantially greater than that included within the turbine so that cessation of toroidal flow occurs at a speed ratio (turbine: impeller) greater than 1.
