864,358. Torque converters. TWIN DISC CLUTCH CO. Nov. 7, 1957, No. 34764/57. Class 69 (2). A torque converter, driven for example by a governed diesel engine, has its stator 27 and pump 15 in the outward flow portion and its turbine 21 in the inward flow portion of the circuit, and the U-shaped passages 16, 22 are unbladed. Each blade in the elements 15, 21, 27 is oriented as set forth in the Specification. Liquid is forced through a cooling system by means of a pump run off the engine and this forced circulation is augmented at low speed ratios by the circulation in the converter. At high ratios, the liquid head at the inlet of the turbine tends to oppose circulation in the converter and the pump acts alone. When a speed ratio is reached between 8 and 9, torque ceases to be transmitted. Since the channels between the pump and impeller blades are wider at the radially outer end than the inner end, compensation is made to prevent variations in pressure by narrowing the axial width of the channels in a radially outer direction. In one form, the pump blades are interspersed with smaller blades which prevents a tendency for the liquid to circulate between blades. The stator has variably-pivoted blades.
