Abstract

990,910. Hydrodynamic torque converters. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 10, 1964 [May 27, 1963], No. 9990/64. Heading F2C. An hydrodynamic torque converter comprises an impeller having first and second sections with blades 40, 186, a turbine having first, second and third sections with blades 44, 114, 58, the blades 58 being of variable incidence, and stators 136, 160 mounted by way of one-way detents 156, 176 on a stationary shaft 76. The second set of impeller blades 186, is of variable incidence in a modification. The first turbine section has inner and outer shrouds 46, 48, the inner shroud being connected by a torque transfer member 52 extending across the core-space to the inner shroud 54 of the third turbine section. The outer shroud 48 is connected by an axial member 100 and by webs 102 extending through the torus to a bracket 106 connected to the inner shroud 110 of the second turbine section. The first stator 136 is connected by a member 142 extending across the core-space to webs 146 extending through the torus to the outer race of the one-way brake 156. The blades 58 of the third turbine section are mounted on pins 60 having cranked ends engaging a groove 96 in an annular piston 80 shiftable axially of the converter to vary the incidence of the blades.
