Abstract
1,153,873. Hydrodynamic torque converters. A. LYSHOLM. 20 June, 1966 [28 June, 1965], No. 27367/66. Heading F2C. In a hydrodynamic torque converter wherein fluid flows radially outward through an impeller 2 fast with an input shaft 6 and a turbine 3a fast with an output shaft 3d and radially inward through a reactor 4a, the duct 13 between the reactor 4a and impeller 2 decreases its crosssectional area by at least 5% to form a restriction in the region A-A ahead of the impeller which increases the speed of flow and prevents flow separation. To reduce the boundary layers and improve flow through the impeller 2, a step 2b is provided in the hub of the impeller, and a projection 5b on the reactor core cooperates with a contoured surface on the impeller core. In Fig. 2 (not shown), an additional reactor (25a) held by a one-way detent (14) is provided in the flow circuit ahead of the fixed reactor (24a). In Fig. 3 (not shown), an additional contra-rotating turbine (16a) is provided ahead of the reactor (26a) and is connected through an idler gear (18) and one way clutch (22) to the output shaft.
