707,482. Torque converters. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1951 [Dec. 30, 1950], No. 29969/51. Class 69 (2) In a hydrodynamic torque converter comprising a pump or impeller 10, a turbine or runner 11, and a stator or reactor 12 arranged to form a closed fluid circuit with the junction between pump and turbine member substantially at the largest radius and the reactor at substantially the smallest radius of the circuit, the pump, turbine and reactor members have the entrance and exit portions of their vanes angularly disposed with relation to the adjoining exit and entrance portions of the vanes of the other members in such a way that the discharge angle of the fluid flow from the exit portions of the vanes 15 of the pump corresponds to the angle of the adjoining entrance portions of the vanes 24 of the turbine at a different speed ratio between turbine and pump members from the speed ratio at which the discharge angle of the fluid flow from the exit portions of the vanes 24 of the turbine corresponds to the angle of the adjoining entrance portion of the vanes 29 of the reactor, and that the discharge angle of the fluid flow from the exit portions of the vanes 29 of the reactor corresponds to the angle of the adjoining entrance portions of the pump vanes 15 at a speed ratio different from both of the aforesaid speed ratios. For example, in one embodiment, as shown in the diagrammatic vectorial representation of Fig. 37, the fluid flow from the pump or impeller is in the same direction as the entrance portions of the vanes of the turbine at a speed ratio (S.R.) between 0.8 and 0.9, and the fluid flow from the turbine is in the same direction as the entrance portions of the vanes of the reactor or stator at a speed ratio between 0.6 and 0.7, and the fluid flow from the stator is in the direction of the entrance portions of the impeller vanes at a speed ratio between 0.5 and 0.6. Particulars of the form, curvature, angles and numbers of the various vanes are given. The stator 12 is mounted on a one-way brake Q which permits rotation of the stator at the " coupling point," i.e. at the speed at which the torque converter is to function as a simple fluid coupling.
