Abstract

1375944 Hydrodynamic coupling F W F VON HOHENZOLLERN [trading as FURSTLICH HOHENZOLLERNSCHE HUTTENVERWALTUNG LAUCHERTHAL] 21 Jan 1972 [26 Jan 1971] 3036/72 Heading F2C A temperature controlled hydrodynamic coupling for the drive to an engine cooling fan comprises a bladed turbine wheel T fast with an axially slidable sleeve 19 splined to an output shaft 7, a driving casing 2 carrying pump blade P which project through slots 23 of a pump ring 24 rotatably mounted on the sleeve 19, and a temperature responsive element 12 which acts through a plunger 30 and leaf spring 27 to move the sleeve 19, turbine T and pump ring 24 axially against the bias of a return spring 28 to vary the distance between the pump and turbine blades and thus vary the speed ratio of the coupling. A hub 11 of the fan which carries the temperature responsive element 12 is insulated from the fluid coupling by a heat insulating sleeve 10. Cooling fins 4, 5 and 6 are provided.
