Abstract

648,847. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING, Ltd. Oct. 9, 1947, No. 27130. [Class 122(v)] In a liquid sealing means between a rotary member 1 and a stationary member 12, a stationary sealing ring 11 is located in the member 12 and a rotary sealing ring 9 is mounted on the rim of the outer cylindrical wall of an annular sealing ring carrier 4 of U-shaped cross section the inner cylindrical wall of which embraces the rotary member 1, the material composing the carrier 4 being such that the outer wall can creep axially with respect to the inner wall, the rotary sealing ring 9 being maintained in pressing contact with the opposed non-rotary sealing ring 11 by springs 15 housed in the cavity between the inner and outer walls of the carrier 4, which cavity also contains part of a drive ring 5 presenting a shoulder to take the counter pressure of the springs 15 without preventing the aforesaid axial creep of the outer wall, the remainder 5<SP>1</SP> of the drive ring extending into embracing contact with the rotary member 1 so as to be driven thereby, the said sealing means including a rigid supporting ring 10 shaped and located inside the U-shaped ring carrier 4 to prevent the latter from becoming unduly distorted by the external fluid pressure acting upon it. The stationary ring 11 is axially adjustable towards the rotary ring 9 by the pressure of a backing ring 16 enclosed by an adjustable hood member 17 which may be locked in position by a pin 20. Specification 648,814 is referred to.
