Abstract

634,855. Stuffing-box substitutes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 14, 1947, No. 12956. Convention date, May 15, 1946. [Class 122(v)] In a sealing device for a rotating shaft 10 comprising a U-section annular cham.ber formed about the shaft 10 and constituted by a central member and a relatively rotatable member and into which sealing liquid is forced by centrifugal force, additional non - liquid sealing means are provided having surfaces which form a seal when the shaft 10 is stationary and which are spaced apart by centrifugal force when the shaft 10 is rotating. The outer member comprises a housing 12, 13 which encloses the liquid and whose outer wall 12 is attached to the shaft 10 and through whose inner wall 13 extends a stationary cylindrical member 14 ,spaced from the shaft 10 from which member 14 a stationary sealing member 15 extends radially within the housing 12, 13. A conical deflector 16 extends'from the member 15 towards the wall 12 and a baffle 17 extends from the wall 12 over the deflector 16 to prevent liquid falling on to the shaft 10 when it slows down from high speeds. A resilient slotted grummet 18 carried by the wall 13 comprises the non-liquid sealing means. In modifications the grummet may be replaced by a sealing ring about the shaft and a rotatable sealing member connected to the housing by springs and pivot arms so that it is caused to move axially into engagement with the ring which contacts a fixed wall at standstill or low speeds and the stationary member may be the housing in which case means are provided to circulate liquid through the housing.
