Abstract
655,880. Securing elements to shafts. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 26, 1948, No. 5842. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1945. [Class 80(ii)] A high speed rotor, such as the impeller of a centrifugal compressor 1, is secured to its shaft 3 by a friction fit of its bore on to a corresponding cylindrical part of its shaft and the engagement of an extension 18 with an annular shoulder 17 of a flange 15 of the shaft. The action of centrifugal force is greater on the righthand side of the impeller, owing to its greater mass and diameter, and produces a tightening of the extension 18 against the shoulder 17 and the left-hand end of the bore of the impeller on to the shaft. The impeller may be fitted on to a sleeve secured by keying to the shaft 3 and the shoulder 17 provided en this sleeve. Alternatively the shoulder 17 may be provided by a separate ring pressed on to an extension of the impeller and free from the shaft or sleeve. In this case the restraint thus imposed increases the grip of the opposite end of the bore on to the shaft only. Specifications 340,450 and 640,669 are referred to.
