Abstract

621,526. Stuffing-box substitutes. ANGUS, & CO., Ltd., G., and JAGGER, E. T. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36128. [Class 122(v)] A sealing device for a rotating shaft permitting minimum clearance between relatively rotating parts comprises a substantially rigid bush fromed on a periphery with a helical groove and connected by a radially extending resilient annular web to a rigid mounting. The bush a preferably of metal has a square helical groove b in its inner surface, and is firmly banded to a rubber web d having its outer rim e stiffened by a metal insert f, a rubber sleeve i' clamped to the shaft k by a metal sleeve j has a lip i sealing against the outer surface of the bush to maintain an effective seal when the shaft is stationary. The lip is centrifugally lifted away from the bush during rotation. The helical groove may be in the form of a Vee thread. In another embodiment a resilient sealing lip may be provided adjacent the push a, to contact the shaft continuously and provide a seal when the shaft is stationary. In a still further embodiment, the sealing device may be adapted to rotate with the shaft, the helical groove being disposed in the outer periphery of the device to provide a seal against a stationary housing.
