Abstract

996,711. Shaft seals. GEORGE ANGUS & CO. Ltd. June 5, 1964 [July 8, 1963], No. 26939/63. Heading F2B. A shaft seal comprises a bush 1 of resiliently deformable material which is connected by a stiffened radial web 3 to a relatively rigid annular holding portion 4 and has a helical groove 13 in a periphery thereof and a flexible annular lip 14 axially spaced from an end 12 of the groove 13. An L-section metal ring 6 has an axial flange 7 embedded in the portion 4 and a radial flange 8 embedded in the outer end face of the web 3. The lip 14 is urged inwardly by a garter spring 15 and the bush 1 is connected to the web 3 by a flexible neck 9. In use, the bush fits closely around the shaft to be sealed, and the groove 13 is handed so that during shaft rotation it acts as a feed-back screw to oppose leakage, any fluid leaking past the groove being sealed by the lip 14 which also acts as a seal when the shaft is stationary.
