Abstract

645,937. Velocity-modulated tubes. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Sept. 13, 1946, No. 27542. Convention date, April 12, 1943. Addition to 640,697. [Class 39 (i)] In the reflex device of the parent Specification, in which multiple reflections occur between brake-field electrodes 3, 9, a further electrode 10 at cathode potential is interposed before electrode 9 and is designed to provide within itself a region of low potential gradient ; by this means the field between boundary electrode 7 and electrode 10 can be made so that the retarded electrons all take the same time to return to the control space 4, 5, while any accelerated electron which passes through into the space 9-10, takes a different time. If desired, the field between electrodes 9, 10 may be made so that the time of all accelerated electrons is also equalized and differs by half a cycle from that of the retarded electrons. Subsequent reflections are isochronous for both classes of electrons. The electrode 10 may have grid wires 12 over both sides of its aperture, or bent slats may be mounted in the aperture itself, Fig. 3 (not shown). A magnetic focussing field may be provided.
