Convention date, March 6, 1941.'[Classes 51 (i) and 51(ii)] In a grate for gas producers, shaft furnaces and the like comprising a number of annular grate elements which decrease in diameter progressively upwards to form a substantially conical arrangement, the annular elements surmounting the base 11 are bounded by peripheral surfaces 12 of oval shape or by peripheral surfaces 13 of circular form, the latter being formed with slots 14 for the admission of air, each type of element being arranged alternately. The superposed elements are positioned relatively by teeth 4 engaging slots in a lower element and are held together in a known manner by an axial tie bar 6 connected to the uppermost element 8 and to a tie bar 9 in the base of the grate. In modifications, the peripheral surfaces 12 or the base 11 may be formed with eccentric lobes instead of being made ovalshaped, the cupola of the grate may take an elongated narrow shape, the corners of the annular plates may not lie in a single horizontal plane but may have a wavy contour, or each integral element may comprise an upper oval section and a lower circular section.
