Abstract

A bundle of tubes to be welded at their ends are cleaned by immersing for 10-30 seconds in a warm 10 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide followed by rinsing in water, then immersing in a warm 10 per cent solution of nitric acid for 1 to 2 minutes, and finally rinsing in warm water. The welding flux powder may consist of 34.7 per cent potassium chloride, 49 per cent of sodium chloride, 8.2 per cent of cryolite, 1 per cent of strontium chloride, 1 per cent of sodium fluoride, 6.1 per cent moisture and a trace of lithium. The tubes may consist of an aluminium alloy of 0.25 per cent copper, 0.6 per cent magnesium, 0.35 per cent silicon and the balance aluminium with melting point from 1140-1210 DEG F, or an alloy of 0.25 per cent chromium, 0.25 per cent copper, 1 per cent magnesium, 0.6 per cent silicon and the rest aluminium, and having a melting point of 1115 to 1210 DEG F.
