Abstract

637,471. Magnetic thickness gauges. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., BENNETT, R. S., and WALTON, K. Aug. 29, 1947, No. 23908. [Class 37] Apparatus for determining the thickness of a non- magnetic coating on a magnetic base comprise an electromagnet 3 having a movable core 9 surrounded by a movable, non-magnetic sleeve 5, and normally held with a contact on its upper end against a fixed contact 27 by a spring 15. In operation, the unit is pressed normally against the test surface to push back an extending portion of the sleeve 5 against a spring 25 until the core 9 is in contact with the work surface. The pressure is then removed and the body of the instrument is moved away from the surface by the spring 25 but the core is held magnetically against the surface. The circuit over contact 27 is thus broken and lamp 57, Fig. 4, is extinguished The energizing current of the electromagnet is then reduced by a variable resistance 49 until the. armature is just released and lamp 57 relights, the current, indicated on a meter 45 being a measure of the thickness of coating on the work-piece.
