615,763. Electric gauges. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and WALTON, K. July 31, 1946, No. 22776. [Class 37] A device for measuring the thickness of a non- magnetic coating on a magnetic base comprises an electromagnet 17, the core 7 of which is biassed upwardly by a spring 11, and a coaxial plunger 25 also biassed upwardly by a spring 33, the core and plunger normally contacting one another at contacts 39, 41 as shown in Fig. 1. In operation, the D.C. through the coil 17 is first adjusted at 59 to a maximum. The core 7 is then forced downwardly by means of the handle 37 into engagement with the work being gauged where it is held by the electromagnet. The handle 37 is then released and breaks the circuit of a normally lit lamp 73 at contacts 39, 41. The current in coil 17 is then gradually reduced by adjusting resistor 59 until the spring 11 pulls the core 7 away from the work, when the lamp 73 is relit. The current flow at this instant is a measure of the non-magnetic coating thickness and is read on the meter 55 which may be graduated to read thickness direct. A variable resistor 6 is used to compensate for ageing of the supply battery 53 and the meter may be shunted by an adjustable resistor to cater for a plurality of thickness ranges.
