575,150. Magnetic tests and measurements. TIMMS, E. S. SPENCER-. Aug. 9, 1944, No. 15189. [Class 37] A device for testing the thickness of coatings on ferromagnetic materials, comprises a permanent magnet mounted on the shorter arm of a steelyard balance so that it can be applied to a specimen under test, the longer arm of the balance carrying a movable counterpoise. When the counterpoise 7 is adjusted so that the lower end of the magnet 5 is just detaching itself from the specimen, a measure is obtained of the least force required to detach the magnet and hence of the thickness of the coating at the place where the magnet is applied. The counterpoise may be adjusted by hand, by arranging it to engage with a helical grove 9 cut on the longer arm 3, its position being fixed at any desired place by a pin 8. The reading of the balance is facilitated by the arbitrarily chosen scale 10. Preferably the magnet is rod-shaped and the lower end is hemispherical.
