624,567. Resistance measurements. SHOTTER, G. F., and NORTHMET POWER CO. June 25, 1946, No. 19042. [Class 37] The Figure shows a device for measuring the resistance of a conduit 1, comprising a casing containing an ammeter 6 in series with a switch 14 and a variable resistance 5, one terminal of which is connected by a short lead 7 to a clip 8 engaging one end of the conduit. A long lead 9 connects the switch to the earthed end 2 of the conduit, through the secondary of a mains energized transformer 11 supplying a predetermined test current to the circuit, the value of which is marked on the scale of the ammeter. In operation the switch is closed and the variable resistance is adjusted until the ammeter indicates the predetermined current. The conduit resistance may be read from the scale of the variable resistance which is calibrated in conjunction with leads 7 and 9 and the transformer 11 to read the conduit resistance directly when the variable resistance is adjusted as above. A lower current value may be marked on the ammeter scale, when a second calibrated resistance scale is provided for use therewith. The instrument may be D.C. fed, and lead 7 may be replaced by a spring prod operating the switch 14 when pressed into contact with the conduit.
