Abstract

693,521. Electric indicating systems. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., and COCKETT, A. H. Feb. 4, 1952 [Feb. 23, 1951], No. 4472/51. Class 40 (i). Variations in the height of a mercury column 2 in a closed non-magnetic container, e.g., a tube 1, are measured by the corresponding impedance changes produced in an A.C. energized coil 5 surrounding the tube. To enhance the sensitivity of the device an iron wire 3 may be held centrally within the tube 1, e.g., by springs 4, and a further shorter coil 6 series connected with coil 5 may embrace the latter at a position corresponding to a predetermined (zero) position of the mercury meniscus. For measuring fluid-flow by means of a differential manometer, each of the limbs of the manometer is constructed as shown in Fig. 1, and the series combination of coils 5, 6, on the two limbs connected in alternate arms L1-R1, L2-R2 of an impedance bridge, Fig. 2, fed through a constant output voltage transformer T1 and step-down transformer T2. The bridge is balanced at a predetermined mercury level, the galvanometer G then indicating deviations therefrom. Alternatively, a barreter may be used for ensuring a constant voltage supply to the bridge.
