Abstract
695,425. Electric tests and measurements. BOWSER, Inc. Sept. 27, 1951 [Oct. 3, 1950], No. 22590/51. Class 37. Apparatus for determining the flow of a fluid in a non-magnetic pipe comprises means for producing a magnetic field across the pipe perpendicular to the direction of flow, with an electrode in either side of the pipe, the magnitude of the P.D. produced between the electrodes being proportional to the rate of flow of the fluid. In an embodiment (Fig. 1), a non- magnetic, non-conducting pipe 9 containing electrodes 11, 13 is mounted in a casing 1, 3 symmetrically over a block of E-shaped laminations whose centre limb 35 is surrounded by a coil 37 fed with A.C. or D.C. The lamination block is initially adjusted with no fluid flowing to produce no P.D. between electrodes 11, 13 and subsequent voltages between the electrodes are proportional to the rate of flow of fluid in the pipe. To reduce the effect of stray fields the pipe 9 is preferably covered by a jacket 15 of non-magnetic, conducting material.
