Abstract
726,271. Electric tests. T.O.B.I. N.V. May 27, 1953 [June 20, 1952], No. 14823/53. Class 37. Apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of a conductive liquid through a pipe wherein a magnetic field is produced perpendicular to the direction of flow and a P.D. is obtained between two diametrically opposite electrodes in the flow perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field, whose magnitude is proportional to the rate of flow, is characterized in that the magnetic field is alternating and is produced by an elliptically shaped coil. As shown, Fig. 5, the detector unit comprises a circular metal tube 2, internally coated with a layer 6 of insulating material, and externally surrounded by coils 3, 3<SP>1</SP> whose outer surface forms an ellipse and is covered by an iron shell 7. Ridges 8 are provided on the tube 2 to locate the coils 3, 31 and secure the shell 7. The Specification also describes the known apparatus, Fig. 1, comprising a core 1 with energizing coils 3, the pipe 2 being of insulating material with a cover of conducting material or vice'versa, and longitudinal earthed electrodes (not shown) to stop stray electric currents through the liquid.
